This is an artist who is able to shift and expand his sound from album to album without losing his best qualities. In a way, Bonobo has gone back to his roots in The North Borders, almost completely eliminating the jazz-influenced sounds of Days To Come (which, admittedly, I will miss) while reintroducing many of the quirky instruments from his first two albums (xylophones for instance) combined with the synth and club beats he introduced in Black Sands. The result is by far his most textured and layered album to date, with so many sounds and instruments and clips in the background it almost sounds like IDM music, only far more sweeping with a much richer sound.
Emkay, one of the album's best. Other stand-outs are Cirrus,
Know You, and especially Ten Tigers and Transits, the best two tracks by far.
Ten Tigers starts like a night at the club and morphs seamlessly into one of the most beautiful tracks Bonobo has ever crafted. . Overall, this album is on par with Black Sands and nearly on par with my favorite, Days To Come, which is to say it's a masterful album that demonstrates how well Bonobo can adapt and expand his sounds without losing anything in the process. I have full confidence in Bonobo now and eagerly await anything he will come out with in the future.
Bonobo - Transits (Featuring Szjerdene)
Transits is what I'd call the best "single" from the album featuring gorgeous vocals to a moody effervescent flow

I've always loved Bonobo, and more specifically Simon Green for his incredible musical sense in creating some of the best down-tempo trip hop I've ever heard. Not only will this music exercise your speakers, but it will captivate your mind. I'm astonished at how every time I listen to Bonobo I feel like I'm discovering something new, and for the most part that is the case here.
As I listen to "North Borders" I don't feel as if the tone or style of the album is anything new when referenced to past work, but it maintains the same brilliance that made me such a fan in the first place. So to some extent, this can be attributed to the past success of Bonobo...which you really can't fault.
The album as a whole is somewhat more laid back than past work, with slightly more atmospheric passages, and the music seems to transcend mood for me, as I can easily listen to it when I'm trying to get work done or just want to jam out. The lyrics as usual for Bonobo are sparse, reflective and well placed.
This album is worth a complete purchase, but if looking fora few "best of" tracks go for:
"Towers," Awesome lyrical song, nice downtempo rhythm with syncopated synths throughout, builds for an excellent 3+ minutes.
"Ten Tigers," Typewriter sounds, deep bass, forward keys and harp throughout. Chill and remorseful. One of my favorite instrumentals here.
"Jets," Uses the female vocal as part of the song and rhythm. A great get down track with soul.
"Heaven for the Sinner," Nice female vocal, builds throughout by adding pieces to the track. Layered nicely with nice frenetic yet chill spacing.
"Pieces," Cinematic, layered and harmonizing vocal rhythm along with frontal vocals, strings and great forward moving beat. Really really cool track.
