A sideman no more, Thundercat comes crashing to the fore with a debut that fuses funk, electro and jazz, while working very hard to keep the emotive power of the songs front and center. If you like Prince, Zappa and George Duke, this is your album. And if you like all three you'll likely think it's one of the best albums of the year...and you'd be right.
Standout tracks include:
"Is it Love?"
"Return to the Journey"
"Daylight"
"Boat Cruise"
...but really, there isn't a bad song on this record.
There is almost no Earthly explanation for the bass lines this man can drop. They're some of the most inventive, jazzy, and all-around coolest riffs I've heard in a while. This album seems like a direct continuation on Flying Lotus' "Cosmogramma," on which Thundercat's skill was heavily utilized. Point being- this is a fantastic album, and if you're a fan of Flying Lotus, you're already a fan of Thundercat even if you didn't know it.

Flying Lotus and Thundercat are such a great combo, I just wish they would do more songs together.
