Following a series of wildly popular independent mixtapes and the Lovers Holiday EP that landed him a performance on The Late Show with David Letterman earlier this year, Timez Are Weird These Days arrives as Theophilus' most fully realized work to date: a wide-open album of original music, genre bending sound, mesmerizing storytelling and inspired, honest emotion.
Recorded in NYC, LA and Stockholm, Timez Are Weird These Days showcases Theophilus as a rapper and a songwriter working with a small clique of producers. With John Hill, Dave Sitek, Jokke and Ariel Rechstshaid at the controls Theophilus kicks off the album with rap credentials intact on "Last Name London" before moving through a surprising range of emotion, from party starting dance floor defiance to moments of quiet intimacy and introspection.
Timez Are Weird These Days exclusively features two guest vocalists: indie star Holly Miranda on "Love Is Real" and Sara Quin of Tegan and Sara on "Why Even Try. "
If you're a fan of Kenna, you're already a fan of T. London. And just like Malcolm Gladwell's writing on Kenna in his book "Blink", London suffers from a modest welcome not due to a lack of talent, but perhaps a confused marketing target.
This problem is apparent simply by looking at the guest starts: the brave T. London decides to plug into the indie community not just for talent to include on the album, but inspiration.
His music has a touch of mainstream hip hip/rap, but mostly goes for fresh beats more reminiscent of the 80s and 90s - time periods that indie artists also seek for inspiration. Unfortunately, the mainstream may not be ready for such a nostalgic, yet fresh experience - but perhaps you are.
