SIDE A

Lifers Group-Real Deal (Shadow remix) (5:24)

SIDE B

Shadow - Lesson 4 (8:06)

Just that, a killer 12" of early Shadow mix action. Like a hyperactive Brainfreeze session but with itchymixeyness that was probably an early bedroom routine showing Shad had a point to prove - he got skills, he the selector and the cut professor. A total killer journey from start to finish with a very warm knod to Double Dee and Steinski which completes the deal.

"Lesson 4" by DJ Shadow sampled Lyn Collins's "Think (About It)".

"Lesson 4" by DJ Shadow sampled James Brown's "Funky Drummer".

"Lesson 4" by DJ Shadow sampled Rhythm Heritage's "Theme From S.W.A.T.".

Lifers Group was a group composed of convicts serving sentences at Rahway Prison in New Jersey put together by Maxwell Melvins (inmate 660604). It was a project that gathered together the incarcerated "lifers" to discourage those who still had their freedom from living the gangsta rap lifestyle. The nightmare vision of prison life was revealed in gory detail on tracks like "Real Deal" & the set was recorded 3 months after the Disney-funded Hollywood Basic Records had heard of the scheme.

"Real Deal (Shadow Remix)" by Lifers Group sampled Steinski and The Mass Media's "We'll Be Right Back".
