I have been waiting way too long for this day! I am glad to report that DJ Shadow has laid it all down beautifully for this release. Besides killer production, awesome sampling, and of course incredible beat structure, this album is by far his most creative, ambitious, and mature project yet!
The one difference about this album from previous work is that Shadow has broadened his originality to a larger scope without compromise.
This album truly has a touch of every style, of course there's the "trademark" dark, moody soundscapes, however, this album has soft happy beats, hard rocking party beats, hip-hop, trip-hop, souljazz, and pretty much everything else and a bag of chips!
To be fair, some listeners just like the moody/dark side of Shadow so if you are one of these people you might want to have a listen before your purchase.
The album starts off well enough with "Back to Front (Circular Logic)," a fun, constantly morphing hip-hop instrumental that turns out to be exactly what you would want DJ Shadow to open with.
Other Essential Tracks: Sad and Lonely and Warning Call
a standout, jazzy P-Funk jam ("Run For Your Life"),
A '90s-style throwback track featuring Posdnuos and Talib Kweli (but damn that flute and those whistling cuts are catchy!).
