The Best Of Tom Northcott LP issue featuring Vancouver folk-rock artist Tom Northcott. Features material from the mid-60's to the early 70's all in a very accoustic style.
Thanks to a sincere delivery, he gets the most from a thin, boyish tenor. His cover of "Girl of the North Country" gets the edge over the Bob Dylan original with the poignancy that voice delivers. This compilation outlines the Vancouver singer's career from 1964 to 1971, evolving from garage rock to his real calling as a thoughtful interpreter with excellent taste. He acquits himself particularly well on "The Rainmaker" and "1941" by Harry Nilsson, "I Think it's Going to Rain Today" by Randy Newman, and Donovan's "Sunny Goodge Street," which Northcott imbues with a carnival air worthy of "Being for the Benefit of Mr. Kite" Some of these 16 tunes feature a who's who of crack session players including Leon Russell, Glen Campbell, Jim Gordon, and Larry Knechtel.
Tom Northcott began singing in coffeehouses in 1963 around the Vancouver area. He then formed the Tom Northcott Trio and played in San Francisco in 1966; Warner Brothers later signed him and released "Going Down." Northcott had success with three singles in the late '60s -- "1941," "Girl from the North Country" and "The Rainmaker." He built a production studio in Vancouver in 1969, and quit performing in 1973, though he released a comeback single, "The Trouble with Love," in 1990. The 1971 album Upside Downside is still available.
