Dry Spell You’d be hard pressed to find anything closer to perfection than the Meters’ Look-Ka Py Py album. There are so many downright funky moments on this record it’s amazing. The title cut starts off with a little vocal harmony before going into its guitar led rhythm and two drum breaks. A deep bass line by George Porter leads into Rigor Mortis with its nice and sharp mix on Ziggy Modeliste’s drums. Art Neville’s organ over the top just adds the cherry to the top. A long guitar and drum breakdown ends the tune. Pungee and This Is My Last Affair remind me of Booker T. & The MG’s with their soulful melodies. In between is the short and sweet Thinking that I always associate with Heavy D’s Gyrlz They Love Me. The first side finishes off with the banger Funky Miracle that hits you right in the gut with its bass. The Meters could do no wrong on the flipside either with Yeah, You’re Right, Little Old Money Maker, Oh, Calcutta! with some short open drum bursts, the slow and easy The Mob, the jam 9 Til 5, and finally the down home Dry Spell.
