On M.I.A.'s third album, ///Y/, the pSyc|-|ed3liC, sP@Ce-\////orld-tri|3al00, dUb5tep HIP-h0p diVa finds herself taking a new direction from her past endeavors now focused more on transporting the listener into a schizophrenic cyber-world which seems to accurately mirror the 'reality' we live in today.
With collaborative efforts provided by such artists as Diplo and Rusko, these talents alongside the pro-creative instincts of M.I.A. are combined to release a product focused on taking the listener into a sonically expanding world ridden with plenty of noise and autotune. The highs in the mix reveal themselves for subtle distinctions, and the lows are deep in the mix and right in your face, both at the same time. The album plays off like a YouTube playlist and no songs bear any resemblance to any other on the album.
Opener "The Message" should not be taken lightly, for when it is understood, the basis for what ///Y/ stands for will start falling into place. Songs like "Xxxo" play off like a top 40 (s)hit song by Ms. Gaga or MILEY CYRUS, but under the surface reveal a pop star who is not willing to conform to the self degrading transformation most stars have sold themselves in to. M.I.A. also delivers loud songs like "Born Free"(guitar by Rusko) and "Meds and Feds" (samples Sleigh Bells), which are more rock-dance formulated and stand out as louder than the rest.
In the space world jam "Tell Me Why," M.I.A. drops tribal beats with perfect autotune vocals making a truly re-memorable highlight of the album. This song, like others, have tribalistic beats that show the `Animal Collective' like sound M.I.A. hinted at. The album closes with the Rusko produced "Space," where M.I.A.'s voice floats atop the spacey beats and otherworldly noises thrown in and out of the mix.
.
It's also too bad that so many people are so comfortable with what they know and afraid to fight for honest truth and true freedom. This album should be seen more as a warning for people to know that what they are told is always monitored and filtered and that there are higher forces controlling the information given to us.
