In 1966, Sam, along with other like-minded friends formed the band The Lotus. Band members included Danny So (bass), Wallace Chow (lead guitar), David Cheung (drums), Albert Li (rhythm guitar), and Sam Hui (main vocals). Lotus has two meanings: one, the Lotus automobiles, representing their band's youthful energy; two, the lotus flower, a flower of the Chinese people, representing their uniqueness as an all-Chinese band. The Lotus only ever released two singles.
