Junior Boys are Canadians Jeremy Greenspan and Johnny Dark and they
make sparkly electro-pop which makes you feel happy without having to
try too hard. It's good wholesome stuff : strong tunes, crisp beats,
well-constructed harmonies.
They put me more than a little in mind
of Steely Dan at times. Mr Greenspan has a very nice clean-cut voice;
effortless and mixed well-forward, it makes a good job of the nine songs
on offer. It's not exactly rocket-science but we don't really always have
to aim for the stars to have a good time. These two gentlemen have
their four feet well-grounded in rich soil right here on planet Earth.
Opening track 'Itchy Fingers' is a cracker! It romps along like a puppy
in the park; all skittering synths, funky bass lines and ribald rhythm.
'Playtime' is a far gentler affair; its unhurried progress and dreamy
keyboard accompaniment supporting a lovely high-riding vocal from Mr
Greenspan. He lays back into the mellow pulse and makes a lovely noise.
'A Truly Happy Ending', too, despite its somewhat old-fashioned style
(think early 1980's Level 42 and you're getting somewhere close) also
delivers an infectiously crisp and soulful dance-worthy performance.
'Kick The Can', percolates to the top of the pile for me; its fractured vocaleffects and distant wispy harmonies take their place in a stripped-down arrangement whose semi-abstract nature demonstrates the duo's versatility.
Final track 'Banana Ripple' would doubtless get even the walking-dead dancing!
Summer feels long-gone but 'It's All True' still manages to let the sunshine in.
