Dead Set is a live album by the Grateful Dead. It was released in August 1981 on Arista.
The album contains live material recorded between September and October 1980 in a variety of venues.
Dead Set is essentially the electric brother of the acoustic Reckoning: both of the albums come from the same recorded concerts. It was originally intended for both of the albums to be one double record set, but due to the lengthiness of many of the Grateful Dead's electric tunes, it was decided to release the material separately.
The album starts off with "Samson and Delilah"- Weir gave it his best with loud and fiery vocals.
"Little Red Rooster"- with Weir on slide guitar/Garcia on lead guitar, was a real pressure cooker of blues and rock.
The song "Candyman" was played with the same geltleness as the latter, with pronounced, sharp leads. Also on "American Beauty," this song added a gentle touch to this album.
Phil Lesh (bass, vocals) shined with his lead vocals in "Passenger"- which he co-wrote. With the help of keyboardist Brent Mydland, the set continued with the same good-ole jam style of music.
Even through "Space" and Rhythm Devils" (one of many highlights of the talented percussionist Mickey Hart and drummer Bill Kreutzman), the band exhibited their usual talent of bridging songs together.
