I believe that Moontan was the first album that Dutch band Golden Earring released in America. Listen to any classic rock radio station today and you can still hear their big hit "Radar Love". There are only 5 songs on this album and yet it is a full-length recording. Like another Dutch band (Focus), Golden Earring tends to put more effort into each song and so there are less songs on each album; however, don't let that scare you away. None of the tracks on the record are too long - nor are they repetitive.
The album opens with "Radar Love", which is still a great song and even better when not edited for radio. Next are the 2nd & 3rd tracks, "Candy's Going Bad" and "Vanilla Queen". Although very different from each other, together they seem to tell us a story about a girl who gets caught up in the adult entertainment industry and becomes famous for all the wrong reasons. Candy starts off at a break-neck pace and steams along like a locomotive, then winds slowly to a full stop. Vanilla picks up where Candy left off and although it is paced more slowly, it still burns with an white-hot intensity. After the verses and chorus tell us the story of how candy becomes the vanilla queen, the song comes to a complete stop, then restarts as an extended intrumental (with horns and strings) and drives off down a lonely highway. Next up is "Big Tree, Blue Sea" a light and breezy jazz influenced song that begins with a riff played on flute. Big changes tempo several times before is comes to an end and all of the muscians get a change to show their chops. The album closes with "Are You Receiving Me?", which (like Big), changes tempo a number of times before bringing the album to an end. There is more tension in this last song - it has a darker feel and sound to it. The singer keeps repeating the phrase "are you receiving me" in the chorus - not so much as a question, but more of a plea to be heard. I suppose that being raised in Europe one would naturally be more influenced by classical music than by Pop. Golden Earring has done an excellent job of melding many different musical influences into songs that are well written, well performed, and will stay in your head for days after your first listen. If you liked "Radar Love", then you will like at least some of the tracks on this album.
