The Glitch Mob is a four man musical collaboration with roots from San Francisco and Los Angeles. What initially started as a joke/loose affliation soon stuck as edIT, Boreta, Kraddy and Ooah found themselves frequently playing the same shows and eventually tag teaming during back to back time slots. This eventually led to the four man sonic onslaught of ferocious bass, head cracking drums and in nitely complex rhythms. A proverbial Voltron effect on stage. Taking infuences from hip-hop, experimental, and dance genres, The Glitch Mob have crafted their own form of futuristic dance floor hip-hop that has been "slaying" audiences world wide. Their live sets reinvent the dj “tag-team” concept with four performers on stage at once, interacting like a jazz combo, each taking the lead at intuitive moments, interweaving their own sounds, and remixing everything on the fly. The result is a sound distinctly their own, blending the deep head nod of hip-hop with serious bass music, throwing genre distinctions out the window. The Glitch Mob has been one of the cornerstones of this new electronic hip hop movement that has emerged from Glasgow to Montreal and back to Los Angeles. Taking a nod from the resurgence in the instrumental hip-hop "beats" movement, the Glitch Mob has injected a great sense of dance floor sensibility into the scene and crafted their own niche as new school dance floor destroyers. Members of The Glitch Mob have individually released music on their own imprint Glitch Mob Unlimited which is a subsidiary of Los Angeles' Alpha Pup Records. They plan to release their first full length album in 2009
The Glitch Mob, formed in 2006, is a Los Angeles-based electronic music trio known for powerful live performances using MIDI controllers and laptops. Made up of Justin Boreta, Josh Mayer, and Ed Ma, The Glitch Mob has gained a following on the West Coast and has been a notable performer at various music festivals across the globe. After putting out a series of mixtapes and remixes in the past few years, The Glitch Mob released their first full-length album, titled "Drink the Sea", in 2010. This album proves to be a slight deviation from the sound that The Glitch Mob has become known for, but listening is an endearing and intense experience nonetheless.
The tracks on "Drink the Sea" are characterized by a moderately slow tempo that, for most of the songs, is not quite quick enough to dance to, but does tend to move along. As a whole, the album is full of dense bass-lines, heavy drum hits, and riveting breakdowns. The Glitch Mob is able to produce thick soundscapes punctuated by driving drumbeats. The sum total of this is a quality album with solid replay value. The best way to listen to this is while driving or reading, as it is upbeat enough to keep you energized but the overall lack of vocals lends itself to becoming background music.
"Drink the Sea" begins with "Animus Vox", a memorable and drum-heavy track loaded with intriguing synth melodies. The album then moves on to "Bad Wings", which features a more relaxed style than the first track with similarly notable melodies. The next song is "How to be Eaten by a Woman" which, as with many songs on this album, sounds nearly identical to "Animus Vox". Other songs of note include "Between Two Points", "Drive it like you Stole it", and "Fortune Days". These tracks feature similar driving drumbeats with great synth melodies that tend to envelope the listener in sound.
Overall, "Drink the Sea" proves to be an entertaining an enjoyable album with a solid amount of replay value. This album will definitely be best enjoyed by those who like electronic music and who like to listen to music at very high volumes. The melodies and drums are intense but not overwhelming, making listening exciting and relaxing at the same moment. Per The Glitch Mob's typical style, vocals do not play a significant role in this album and the tracks tend to sound very similar. For those reasons, this album is awesome for passive listening, but at times struggles to keep your attention on its own.
The group's debut album, Drink The Sea, peaked on the CMJ Top 200 Chart for College Radio at #57. The album's debut led Electronic Musician to run a cover story on the trio. Their single, "Drive it Like You Stole It", was #2 on XLR8R's Top Downloads of 2010 list.
Drink the Sea is now on one of my top ten albums of all time. The music can set you off in a dreamy bliss or make you bob your head to it's catchy synth riffs and boomin' drumlines.
