Hailing from Long Island, New York, the pair are generally considered by hip hop enthusiasts to be one of the most influential and innovative groups in the genre.
During hip hop's "golden age" of the mid 1980s to the early 1990s, the duo was almost universally regarded as the premier MC/DJ combo in hip hop.
The two had a potent chemistry; the duo's beats built on the hard-hitting sound of Run-D.M.C. by adding James Brown samples and Eric B's scratching, setting the stage for hip hop's late-1980s/early-1990s infatuation with samples from Brown.
Notable journalist Tom Terrell of NPR referred to the duo as "the most influential DJ/MC combo in contemporary pop music period
Eric B. & Rakim’s Paid in Full is definitely a hip-hop classic. Eric B. re-contextualizes James Brown instrumentals while Rakim raps smooth lyrics like:
You scream I’m lazy, you must be crazy
Thought I was a donut, you tried to glaze me.
Probably the best part of this album is the old-school scratching.
The famous “Paid in Full” is also on this album, though the LP version only clocks in at 3:48 and is nowhere near as interesting as Coldcut’s remix ....the incredible "Seven Minutes of Madness" remix by Coldcut of the title track, which is a contender for greatest remix of all time. Funny, witty, and funky, it's a sampladelic miracle that never gets old no matter how many times you hear it..

--contains a segment which is arguably the best minute fifteen seconds in hip hop history.
