'Elton John's Greatest Hits, Volume 2' was originally released in 1977. The album included 'Sorry Seems To Be The Hardest Word', then his most recent hit, and 'Don't Go Breaking My Heart', his classic duet with Kiki Dee.
'Greatest Hits Vol. 2' is a mixture of the usual classics ('Someone Saved My Life Tonight', Philadelphia Freedom'), familliar chestnuts ('Levon',) and virtually forgotten songs ('Island Girl', Grow Some Funk Of Your Own'). The album also features two cover songs that were hits for Captain Fantastic. The Beatles' hit 'Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds' was a number one smash in early 1975, and a certain famous person using the name psuedonym Doctor Winston O'Boogie plays some funky rhythm guitar parts. (Hint:he co-wrote the song).
Elton also does a blazing cover of The Who standard 'Pinball Wizard', a version that was the featured in 'Tommy', The Who's classic 1975 rock opera in which Elton played the campy pinball wizard with the 20-foot high boots. 'Island Girl' is far from one of Elton's best, yet surprisingly it was a number one hit. Although the song isn't great, it's a catchy tune that grows on you.
This is another astounding collection of Elton John's hits, and it's a comprehensive, and more or less great, look at Elton's biggest period.
