Sometimes Charles Munch can drive one crazy with his inability to keep a steady tempo, but the obvious commitment he has to the music more than makes up for that drawback. The Dutilleux sound world of Le Double is exotic and gorgeous. Henri Dutilleux is a hard-working French contemporary composer who emphasizes quality over quantity by ignoring formal structure and writing rock-solid music custom fit to the sizes of specific groups. Dutilleux's independent spirit stands out apart from many of his French peers.
