Whatever brings you to checking out Deadmau5's most recent album, "4x4=12", be grateful it did.
Arguably the most successful newcomer to the electronic music scene in years, Canadian Joel Zimmerman, or Deadmau5, takes the listener for a surprising ride during the 11 track album "4x4=12" keeping them engaged with constant turns.
Powerhouse track "Some Chords" will be immediately loved by fans of Deadmau5's "Ghosts and Stuff" era. It kick starts the album with a high energy, fit to open a set. Clearly meant to be played in it's entirety, the tracks on "4x4=12" flow perfectly like a live Deadmau5 set is famous for.
Track One, "Sofi Needs a Ladder" introduces Sofi, female singer/rapper featured on multiple album tracks who has become a recent addition to many of the djs live performances including San Francisco's Treasure Island Music Festival. Her pop vocals are almost top40 friendly, and make the track accessible to those new to house music.
Bringing the album to it's peak are two collaborations. An upbeat electro house track featuring American dj and producer Wolfgang Gartner, one of the current artists rising to the top of the electronic music scene alongside Deadmau5. "Animal Rights" showcases both artists talents in a crossover that creates a festival ready vibe.
Calming down the listener, collaboration with Chris Lake, "I Said" is an almost trancey track, easily suited for a late night set closing out an event.
Deadmau5's previous album, "For Lack of a Better Name" featured a set of club and radio friendly songs, while "4x4=12" goes back a bit to Deadmau5's more house heavy roots, long tracks with huge range. "Cthulhu Steps" with it's repetition and serenity is reminiscent of "Strobe".
Also similar to the beloved track "Strobe", "Raise Your Weapon" begins as a house-ballad but transitions halfway into dubstep, almost so bass heavy the delicate female vocals of Greta Svabo Bech are overpowered, but not quite.
"One Trick Pony" doesn't surprise the listener with dubstep like "Raise Your Weapon" but instead begins almost immediately with a traditional dubstep beat and harsh rap vocals by Sofi, almost sounding similar to UK dubstep king Rusko.
Bringing the album back where it began, "Everything Before" is a party friendly house track reminding the listener of everything Deadmau5 is loved for.
"4x4=12" is smooth, well produced, easy to follow, and mind blowing live. Deadmau5 successfully incorporates elements of both old and new house music creating a fresh set of tracks with clever collaborations,
