If you're looking for an introduction to some of Vancouver, BC's best underground talent, this is it. The city's beloved Mint Records has teamed up with the University of British Columbia's CiTR 101.9 FM radio station to release the CiTR Pop Alliance Compilation: Vol 2, an 11-song collection that includes an impressive array of Vancouver indie acts.
Due out in January, the album features a mix of already released tracks and exclusive new material. Among the unreleased tracks are No Kids' cover of Prefab Sprout's "He'll Have to Go," Fine Mist's "I Could Shout" and Kellarissa's "Flatlands." Other bands on the compilation include Apollo Ghosts, Fanshaw and Shane Turner Overdrive.
The album was mastered by Stuart McKillop at Rain City Recorders and David Barclay of Nice Snacks designed the cover art (see above). Everyone donated their time for free and all money raised from the compilation will go to CiTR, who are currently raising funds with their Fundrive campaign.
Only 300 copies have been pressed on 180g vinyl and hand-numbered with care. The songs, labour, mastering and artwork were donated and proceeds from the record will benefit CiTR 101.9fm, the campus radio station where Mint Records began. Tiny trimmings from CiTR’s Duncan McHugh’s beard were mixed into the molten vinyl during the manufacturing process.

These Pop Alliance compilations are a collaboration between Vancouver's Mint Records and UBC's long-running radio station CITR. Mint and CITR have a long history, seeing as Mint was born out of the station's Student Union Building HQ, so its not surprising that the station is the benefactor of these limited-edition vinyl releases.
But even if you couldn't care less about some college radio station (though really, you should) these comps offer a fantastic snapshot of a scene that's criminally ignored in the rest of the country. Vancouver has a long history of producing fantastic melodic punk and independent bands (Pointed Sticks, Cub, The New Pornographers) and the bands included here only strengthen that argument.
Fast rising stars Apollo Ghosts offer up a track from last summer's Cedar Street EP, while the Victoria garage rockers in Slam Dunk offer up a taste of what we can expect on their forthcoming full-length. Hometown hero Nick Krgovich (P:ano) makes two appearances: one with his band No Kids and again on "I Could Shout" from synth-poppers Fine Mist.
Few scene overviews are as diverse in sound and consistent in quality as this one. Track it down now before it becomes local legend..
