This is a solid album, bridging the band's soul-searching double release in '05 and the spiritual journey of Cassadaga from '07 into this new message of enlightenment and universal truths. On The People's Key Oberst is more self-aware than on earlier Bright Eyes' albums. He is more outward looking and comes across as wise yet jaded, as opposed to merely depressed and introspective. The album also benefits immensely from Oberst's work with the Mystic Valley Band. The People's Key takes everything great about Bright Eyes and builds on it brilliantly.
