The quirkiest of Brazil's Tropicalistas, Tom Zé managed to evade stardom while keeping faith with the movement's back-to-the-future ideals throughout his career.
This killer collection, assembled by David Byrne from Zé's '70s releases (mostly), is a terrific introduction to an inventive outsider. Zé's toolkit overflows with the funky cocos, forros and sambas de roda of his native Bahia, and he uses the syllabic deconstructions of concrete poetry in the lyrics and Afro-Brazilian rhythms of "Má," "Um 'Oh!' e Um 'Ah!'," and "Hein?"
If the right instrument didn't exist, Zé would concoct it, and one of his homegrown hybrids — employing blenders, vacuum, and a doorbell keyboard — can be heard in "Toc." Zé crooned Antonio Jobim and Vinicius de Moraes's early bossa nova hit "Felicidade" (Happiness) in 1959, but by 1973 he was mocking bossa composers' strained seriousness in "Complexo de Épico" (Epic Complex).
However, Zé could also write pretty himself, as demonstrated by his own gorgeous bossa original "Să (Solidăo)" (Alone (Solitude)) and "Augusta, Angélica e Consolaçăo."
