The 1973 version of The Jazz Messengers featured trumpeter Woody Shaw, Carter Jefferson's tenor, the keyboards of Cedar Walton (a member of the group a decade earlier) and, on two selections, trombonist Steve Turre. Despite Walton's occasional electric keyboards, this date returns to the feel of the earlier Jazz Messengers recordings with new versions of "Along Came Betty" and "Without a Song," fresh material contributed by Walton and Shaw and fiery hard-bop oriented solos. 70's hard bop.
