This album is to seventies rock what "Reign In Blood" is to "Speed Metal", the purest and most relentless heavy rockin album. Fair enough there are a couple of acoustic interludes and the extremely moody "Solitude" but interspersed between these are five classic heavy rock cuts which are evident influences on many of more recent heavy rock acts (highlighted by the fact that they were all covered on "Nativity In Black"). "Sweet Leaf" the album opener is to all intents and purposes the blueprint for nineties grunge, a classic on stage and on record. "After Forever" shows a little of Iommi's ability to intersperse melody with riffery as well as denounce Satan worship (some of these bible bashers should actually listen to some of Sabbath's lyrics) before "Embryo" leads us into the chugging "Children Of The Grave", quite simply the heaviest song ever. The riffs from this have since been sped up and made a lot of "Speed Metal" bands very famous. Then another acoustic initiated riff fest, "Orchid" nicely introduces us to the again plodding "Lord Of This World" perhaps the weakest of the heavy songs on the album but keeping up the almost relentless assault. But the best for me is saved until last. After the moody "Solitude" (is that really Ozzy singing?) we are treated to the great album closer "Into The Void" another stone cold classic which takes enough time to progress through a few riff changes but remain heavy. This would be the last time Sabbath would pursue the all out heavy root and would take an increasingly more progressive approach which would produce two more great albums and three of varying quality with Ozzy fronting the band. But for me, this is their best. Black Sabbath - Children of the Grave Killer footage. Sabbath at their exciting peek here... Black Sabbath - Into the Void Black Sabbath - Sweet Leaf This is the ultimate band, the original heavy rock instigators, there is no other band that has had as much influence on a music genre let alone influence other bands. The original line up is simply the purest anlthough the one with Tony Martin and Cozy Powell was a close second. This track sounds exactly the same as when i heard it live back in 1974/5 on the Sabbath Bloody Sabbath tour. Absolute 100% heavy rock.
